Associations Meet To End Rainy Season Hazards

In preparation for the rainy season, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) CDS group of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has organized a public lecture on the causes of flooding and the way out.

The lecture which was held at Osogbo Government High School Hall, Osun state was aimed at educating the landlords and land ladies association, the market women association, the secondary students and corps memb on the hazards of flooding and proper waste disposal.

The Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Kareem Olajoku in his speech on ‘Flooding; Osogbo and her environs’ said flooding could be disastrous and beneficial as well if properly managed. He said “about a year ago, there was a terrible flooding along Okefia Rasco area which led to the establishment of a new bridge by the state government to prevent a reoccurrence.

He Advised that houses should not be built on sand filled lands because such lands are disasters waiting to happen.

The Honourable Commissioner for Ministry of Environment and Sanitation represented by Mr Akala Wale in his speech proffered proper drainage and waste disposal as a way out for flooding.

Still speaking he said, looking at the Osun state Waste Management Agency, OWMA, which overseess the collection and proper disposal of waste, cleaning and clearing of drainages in Osogbo alone collects about 320tons of waste and 520 tons from villages in the state. He advised that recycling of non decomposable materials such as plastic bottles, wine bottles and nylon poly bags as a step towards maintaining a clean and flood free environment.

The lecture came to an end with a closing remark from the SDGs CDS vice president, Miss Adeola Adepoju.
